INAUGURATION CEREMONY OF MITI ON SUNDAY MAY 31, 2009

On the eve of Sunday, the 31st May 2009, Karachi metropolis witnessed the
grand opening of MITI amidst the show of jubilant enthusiasm and
admiration from the visitors. It was a rare scene of pride and joy, and
offering of gratitude to Allah (SWT) from almost everyone who has been
involved in MITI since its inception.
The function was attended by a large number of Memons belonging to various
Jamats, and the notables from all walks of life. They were of one voice
and regarded ‘MITI’ a marvel in the history of vocational training in
Pakistan. Lots of applause was offered to WMO for creating a place with a
clear intention of helping the indigent to acquire technical expertise and
to earn a dignified place for themselves and their families in society.
Hon’ble Syed Mustafa Kamal, City Nazim, CDGK, performed the inaugural
ceremony of the Memon industrial & Technical Institute (MITI), a joint
Project of WMO and CDGK, on 31st May 2009.
The ceremony commenced with the recitation of a few verses from the Holy
Quran and followed by Naat-e-Rasool Maqbool (p.b.u.h.)
On behalf of WMO, Haji Abdul Razzak Yaqoob, President, heartily welcomed
the Guest of Honor for taking time out of his multifarious engagements in
attending the ceremony. He spoke highly about the efforts of CDGK and
greatly appreciated the cooperation of Syed Mustafa Kamal and his team
extended to WMO which made the completion of a gigantic task possible
within schedule.
After the speech of the President, the participants were shown a
documentary of the activities of WMO and the Memon community at large,
which the participants whole-heartily appreciated.
Mr. H. M. Shahzad, Chairman MITI, said that the seed which was sown
through the kind courtesy of CDGK some two years ago, possession of which
was handed over to WMO on 14-3-2008, will INSHA ALLAH start bearing fruits
shortly. He said that MITI will work on welfare basis and so far over 250
male students and between 750 to 800 applications from girl students have
already been received. On the great demand of the ladies of the locality,
MITI has decided to arrange separate classes for ladies within next 6
months.
He said that initially the training will be imparted in six courses of 12
to 24 weeks each at a nominal cost of Rs.500/- per month. He expected that
about 4000 students will be given training every year. However, to the
really needy, deserving and poor students, complete waiver of the fees
would also be considered.
Mr. Shoaib Ismail Mangroria, Vice President, WMO, Pakistan Chapter, in his
introductory speech, highly appreciated and thanked Seth Abdul Razzak
Yaqoob and Mr. Majid Alimohamed for immediately arranging finance of US$
200,000 as the first installment.
He particularly praised the efforts of Mr. H. M. Shahzad, Chairman MITI,
for his untiring efforts for the last 15 months to bring MITI operational.
He lauded the efforts of Mr. Abdul Ghaffar Pidha and Mr. Shahab Raza Raja
for advising on the technical side, which made it possible to achieve this
tremendous success. He also had a word of gratitude for Mr. Ashraf
Machiara of United Mobiles, Mr. Polani for English language, Dadabhoy
Institute and other Memons for their support. He gave a brief account of
the activities of WMO (PC) with particular reference to Rehabilitation
work, Education for all, Census, Micro Finance Scheme and the upcoming
Youth Convention.
Mr. Pir Mohammed A Kaliya, Secretary General, WMO (HQ), while giving the
overview of WMO International, termed the establishment of WMO as a
revolution of the 21s century for the Memon community as it has brought
the Memons, living in different parts of the world, on one Platform. He
also reminded Syed Mustafa Kamal regarding his commitment that once the
MITI is completed and run successfully, he will hand-over suitable places
in each of the 18 towns of Karachi for establishing similar projects. Syed
Mustafa Kamal, during his address, reiterated his commitment to give
suitable sites to WMO in 18 towns of Karachi for such projects.
Mr. Pir Mohammed Kaliya said that there were some 1.5 million Memons in
the whole world and WMO has decided to spend about 60% of the funds for
education. He said that funds amounting to over Rs.800 million (equivalent
to US$ 12 million at that time) was collected last year. He appealed to
the Memon Community to become members of the World Memon Organisation and
strengthen it as the future of the Memon community lies in WMO.
Mr. Pir Mohammed Kaliya also apprised the audience that WMO has already
applied to the Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations
Organization for acquiring NGO (Non Governmental Organization) Status. It
will take some time but once WMO achieves the NGO status, funding from
International Agencies would be forthcoming for different welfare
projects.
Mr. Amin Chapal, Chairman, Chapal Group of Companies, said that there were
hardly any Memons in the area. However, WMO decided to establish the
Vocational Institute for the well being and welfare of the people living
in Korangi and Landhi area. He said that MITI would be offering the
facilities to all irrespective of caste creed, religion and colour. He
stressed that the Memon community should join WMO in large number to
enable this organisation to manifold its welfare activities for the
benefit of the humanity at large.
Hon’ble Guest of Honor, Syed Mustafa Kamal, City Nazim, CDGK, in his
speech, while highly appreciating the contribution of Memon Community,
said that the City Government wants to set up industrial and technical
training institutes in every town of the city in collaboration with the
private sector to provide job-oriented training to the unskilled youth. He
said that it would be a blessing to the poor and middle class families. He
expressed the hope that Memon Industrial and Technical Institute will
bring a revolution in the field of technical education not only in Karachi
but also in the whole province of Sindh. He said that after completion of
a 12 to 24 weeks course, a skilled individual would be able to earn a
monthly salary of Rs.12,000/-. He said that similar courses in Air
Ticketing, through the courtesy of Polani Group, should also be
introduced. He hoped that God willing, in the short run, MITI would become
a “Centre of Excellence” in the region. While praising the Memon
Community, he went on to say that as long as this community lives in
Pakistan, there will not be any economic recession in the country.
Thereafter, Shields were presented to the Guest of Honour, Syed Mustafa
Kamal, Special Guest, Mr. Muhammad Amin Chapal, President WMO, Haji Abdul
Razzak Yaqoob Saheb (ARY) and the Vice President, Middle East Chapter, Mr.
Abu Baker Cassim. At the end, Syed Mustafa Kamal performed the opening
ceremony and visited different classes and work-shops. He was full of
praise for WMO and particularly Mr. Shahzad and his team.
